SMS Sender IDs

SMS Sender IDs control the "from" name or number shown on SMS messages sent from Lime Marketing. Only sender IDs that have been verified and enabled can be used for sending.

Why verification is required

Previously, Lime Marketing allowed free-text entry of sender IDs when creating SMS messages. As telecom regulators and carriers have tightened enforcement, unregistered sender IDs are now frequently blocked or rejected. Lime Marketing now requires all sender IDs to be pre-registered and verified before use.

Unverified sender IDs cannot be used

SMS messages — both campaign and transactional — will be rejected if the sender ID has not been verified and enabled. There is no fallback to a default value.

Sender ID format

Lime Marketing supports alphanumeric sender IDs — a brand or company name shown as the sender of the SMS.

Example MyBrand
Length 3–11 characters
Allowed characters Letters (a-z, A-Z), digits (0-9), hyphens, underscores, and spaces. Nordic characters (åäöÅÄÖæÆøØ) are accepted but may be removed or replaced with ASCII equivalents by some carriers — safest to avoid.
Restrictions First and last character cannot be a space

Managing Sender IDs

Sender IDs are managed under Settings > SMS Sender IDs by administrators.

Adding a Sender ID

  1. Navigate to Settings > SMS Sender IDs
  2. Enter the sender ID value
  3. Click Add sender ID

The sender ID is created but cannot be used until verified.

Verification and registration

To get a sender ID verified — or to register it for a specific country — contact support@lime.tech with your organization name, the sender ID, and which countries you intend to send to.

If you're only targeting countries that don't require registration, verification is quick. For countries that do require registration, the process takes longer and will involve effort from your company — Lime will guide you through it, but expect to provide documentation before the sender ID can be verified. See country-level sending rules for which countries require registration and which don't support alphanumeric sender IDs at all.

Once verified by Lime:

  • The sender ID is enabled and appears in the sender selection when creating SMS messages
  • If no default exists, it becomes the default

Default Sender ID

One sender ID per organization is marked as default. It is automatically selected when creating new SMS messages.

Info

The default sender ID cannot be deleted or unverified. To change the default, set another verified sender ID as default first.

Country-level sending rules

Many countries require sender IDs to be registered with a national authority before SMS messages can be delivered. Lime Marketing enforces these rules automatically.

Default: blocked

Countries that are not explicitly listed below are blocked by default. If you need to send to a country not listed here, contact support.

How it works

Every outgoing SMS is checked against the destination country's rules. If the country requires registration and the sender ID isn't registered there, the message is blocked. If registration is recommended but missing, the message is sent but delivery may be degraded — carriers may overwrite or filter the sender ID.

Countries with registration requirements

Countries where the sender ID must be registered before messages can be delivered. Unregistered sender IDs are blocked.

Info

Some countries may impose fines for sending with unregistered sender IDs. This is why Lime Marketing automatically blocks messages to markets that require registration — so you don't accidentally send to a country where your sender ID isn't registered.

How do I know if my sender ID is registered?

There is currently no way to check this in Lime Marketing. If your sender ID is verified and you're already sending successfully to a country, it means either:

  • The country doesn't require registration (most European countries), or
  • Lime has already registered the sender ID on your behalf (e.g. Finland, Spain)

If your sender ID is verified in Lime Marketing, it is safe to use for your current markets. For new sender IDs or new markets that require registration, contact support@lime.tech.

Plan ahead

Registration lead times vary by country — from a few days to several months. Start the process well before you need to send.
